On Wednesday, May 23rd, members of Saint Peter Catholic School’s Wiredcats Blue FIRST Lego League robotics team donated several new Lego set boxes to the Lucille Gorham Intergenerational Community Center (1100 Ward Street, Greenville, NC). Team members Carter Lamson (8th grade), Brighton Hou (8th grade), and Gerald Reiling (6th grade) met with children and staff members at the center. They showed videos of their robot runs and photos of their FIRST Lego League activities to the students and staff in attendance. The Wiredcats Blue members discussed their experiences in FLL and answered their hosts' questions about the program. The visit was intended to stimulate the Community Center 's students' interest in FLL specifically and in the STEM fields in general. Carter Lamson, the Core Values Leader of the Wiredcats Blue Team (which has 10 members) organized the visit to the Community Center.
By making the donation and by sharing what they have learned in FLL with people at the Intergenerational Center, our students were applying the Core Values of FIRST Lego League outside of the FLL competition. This visit was an opportunity for our students to use their experience in a STEM activity to do good in the world, and to share with others.
The Lego boxes were part of a Lego donation drive which was initiated by Elliana Proctor (8th grade) of the Saint Peter Wiredcats Green FIRST Lego League robotics team. Elliana, the Core Values Leader of the nine-member Wiredcats Green team, started the drive and invited the Wiredcats Blue team to join the effort. New Lego box sets were donated by families of Saint Peter Catholic School. As a representative of the Wiredcats Green team, she gave her team's donated boxes to the Maynard Childrens Hospital of Vidant Health so that young patients would have educational toys.
