Saint Peter Catholic School was honored with the Best-Irons Humanitarian Organization Award from the City of Greenville on February 23, 2019.  The award is in recognition of the school's "untiring commitment and exemplary dedication to the advancement of human rights, human dignity and equality for all citizens."

Principal Doug Jones and his wife, Mrs. Susan Jones, were at the awards ceremony to receive this honor.  Mr. Jones invited the several students who were attending the event to accept the award with him.

The following information was submitted with the school's nomination for their community service work during the year of 2018.

January 2018--collected 4,100 cans for the food pantry at St. Vincent de Paul/Saint Peter Catholic Church

January 2018--8th grade students spent a day volunteering at Community Crossroads Center (the local homeless shelter) and Third Street Academy.

January 2018--6th and 7th grade students spent a day volunteering at the food bank.

January 2018--Students in PreK collected and donated snacks to the Ronald McDonald House.

February 2018--National Junior Beta Club members sold candy grams to benefit Catholic Charities.

October 2018--the school's Halloween Carnival hosted Catholic Charities so people could donate canned goods.  The carnival also hosted Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter and their Snuggle with a Puppy set-up, which financially benefits the shelter.

December 2018--National Junior Beta Club members collected gently used coats and new hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves for their Tree of Warmth project.

December 2018--middle school students baked 4,500 chocolate chip cookies that were distributed to servicemen and women who had to work on Christmas Day at the various military bases in the eastern half of North Carolina.

December 2018--Kindergarten students and the Treble Cats (our middle school choir) performed Christmas carols for residents of Cypress Glen Retirement Community.  The kindergarten students also made cards that they personally delivered to the residents.

December 2018--4th grade students collected and packed more than 300 treat bags for soldiers for NC Packs for Patriots, writing homemade Christmas cards and silly jokes to go along with it.  4th grade students also collected pop tabs and 3 boxes of supplies for the Ronald McDonald House in the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center

Weekly--students donate canned goods for the food pantry.

Weekly--students in our 3rd and 5th grade classrooms bring canned goods to make soup.  Each Thursday, four industrial-sized pots of soup are transported to the JOY Soup Kitchen. National Junior Beta Club members make sandwiches for the soup kitchen.

Monthly--students bring bread, peanut butter and jelly for the food pantry.

SPCS is now listed on Amazon Smile.  That means when you shop on Amazon, Amazon will donate a portion of the proceeds from your purchase to our school.  The video above is a tutorial how to do it, or follow these steps:
1.  Go to Smile.Amazon.com
2. Search for "Saint Peter Catholic Church and School"
3. Select "Saint Peter Catholic Church and School"
4. Go to Smile.Amazon.com every time you want to order something from Amazon to ensure the school benefits from your purchase.

Use the Amazon mobile app?  It's not as seamless as using the website on a desktop, but it's not difficult either.  Use your browser on your phone or tablet to go to smile.amazon.com.  Sign in there to use Amazon Smile and benefit our school.  You can also make your life easy by tapping the button on the bottom of the screen that has a square and an arrow coming out of the top.  Then select "Add to Homescreen."  That will create a shortcut on your phone or tablet, that will work just as well as the traditional Amazon app.

At the NC FIRST Lego League State Championships in Greensboro on Sunday, February 3rd, the Saint Peter Catholic School Wiredcats Green team finished 5th out of 60 teams in the robot game and the Wiredcats Blue team finished 14th.  Wiredcats Green's score of 171 was the 7th highest robot game score of the 120 teams that qualified for either the Saturday or Sunday State Championship tournament brackets.  (There are over 500 FLL teams in North Carolina.)  The Wiredcats Green team also got a judging callback because of their outstanding engineering project which included a working model of robotically adjustable liquid lens glasses.

Both Wiredcats teams qualified for the State Championships because of their performances at the Winterville regional NCFLL qualifier tournament, where Wiredcats Green won the Champions Award for best overall team and Wiredcats Blue won the 1st Place Innovative Solution Award for their research project.

Wiredcats Green members are Alex Cooper (7th grade), Jamie Galinis (7th), Jeremiah Reid (8th), Gerald Reiling (7th), Jake van Reede (6th), Michelle Saucedo-Trinidad (7th), Jackson Schreiber (8th), Will Wright (6th), and Sunook Yoon (6th).

Wiredcats Blue members are Brayden Boykin (6th grade), Wright Collins (6th), Carson Koesters (6th), Tiago Marlow (7th), Jasmine Pandya (7th), Ryan Scargle (6th), Rylan Tuten (7th), and Mark Warren (6th).

Faculty members Mr. John Bell (head coach), Mrs. Katie Howard, and Mrs. Chelsea Haigwood, as well as SPCS parents Mr. Kevin Pandya and Mr. Bernardo Saucedo, worked together to coach our teams this season. Parents of our team members worked as volunteers throughout the day at the Greensboro tournament and were important in creating a positive experience for our students.

On the day to celebrate teachers during Catholic Schools Week, some members of the Halloween Carnival Committee  handed out teacher grants.  You may remember that the proceeds from our Country Store at the carnival would be used to fulfill teacher wish list items.  The committee voted on which items should be purchased with the funds available.
Mrs. King and Mrs. Tew received new cd players/boom boxes.
Mrs. Alexander received a new DRA/Reading Assessment kit that can be used by all teachers in K-2.
Mrs. Crumpler received new headphones for the computer lab.
Mrs. Farley received 60 new books to imrpove our library's offerings.
Mr. Hughes received 10 new futons to replace the desks in his classroom (the students are extremely excited about this grant also).
Mrs. Haigwood received 4 microscopes for her science lab.

Here is a photo album of the fun!

Thank you to everyone for their support of the HSA so it can support our teachers, and to everyone who supported the Halloween Carnival in 2018.   By the way, the final total for the Halloween Carnival is in....$50,007.47.  We have much to be grateful for!
