Coronavirus/COVID-19 Update - Afternoon of March 12, 2020

3/13/2020

Dear JPII and SPCS family,
Please be aware that we continue to very closely monitor the progression of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We are paying particularly close attention and following Pitt Co. Health Officials, the NCDHHS, the CDC, and WHO guidelines and advice. As well we are currently making contingency plans for the case that this situation requires a disruption in normal school operations and learning.

People who think they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Please be aware that there are no confirmed cases of infection at JPII nor SPCS. As of this writing there are no known cases in Pitt County. In fact all known cases in NC are travel related. People may very well be self quarantined for a variety of reasons … e.g. travel history, unrelated illness etc. This does not mean they have been infected.
Please use trusted resources like www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html, pittcountync.gov/coronavirus, and https://epi.dph.ncdhhs.gov/cd/diseases/COVID19.html for factual information and advice on how to combat the spread of the Coronavirus and subsequent disease COVID-19 to stay informed.

What are we doing?

1. We are sharing this advice from the CDC website with students:
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
• CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
• Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
2. Staying in constant communication with Health Officials.
3. Monitoring student absences, travel, and illnesses very closely
4. Relaxing our policies on absences and makeup work
5. Evaluating and/or canceling large events, community service activities, and field trips.
6. Following cleaning and disinfecting recommendations and protocols.
7. Making contingency plans for a transition to remote learning.
As of today State officials are not recommending school building closures. Please rest assured that if such a decision needs to be made we will do so with extreme care and consideration. We understand the impact this would have on our community.

Please do not panic but take this time to prepare. Along with normal at home preparedness. Have contingency plans for child care and make sure you have good internet access. If you would please reach out to your appropriate main office if you do not have reliable high speed internet at your homes.

A transition to remote learning would require reliable internet service at your homes. To be successful such a transition will require all of us working together as a community … from home.

Please be patient with us as this is uncharted territory for us all. Rest assured we will make the best possible decisions to protect our students, families, staff, and community as humanly possible.
Above all please continue to pray for all those affected by and a speedy end to this crisis.

Coronavirus/COVID-19 Update - Morning of March 13, 2020

3/13/2020

Dear JPII and SPCS Families,

Throughout this pandemic crisis you will likely be hearing more and more from us as information comes available. In light of some misinformation floating around we wanted to send another quick memo to clear this up.

It is important that people who self quarantine are not assumed to have Covid-19 (the pandemic type of Coronavirus). Remember we still have people coming down with the various flu viruses and common cold viruses (like NL63 a common Human Coronavirus around since the 60’s). People that come down with these common viruses are at higher risk of complications from the pandemic level-novel Covid-19 and will often be advised by medical professionals to protect themselves by self quarantine. People that have traveled to and from high risk countries and/or so called “hot spots” are also often self quarantined.

Please be assured with absolute certainty that if anyone in our JPII and/or SPCS community gets infected with Covid-19 you will be notified immediately after we are notified. We will not be putting out notifications when students or staff come down with the flu or other common cold viruses that are in no way related to this pandemic Covid-19 virus. We will never withhold important information and always do our best not to convey unnecessary information.

“I am so excited for the opportunity to continue improving our school that is so dear to my heart,” Mrs. Alexander says.

About Mr. Craig Conticchio
Mr. Conticchio is the principal of John Paul II Catholic High School, a role he has held since in 2015.  Prior to that Mr. Conticchio taught physics at East Carolina University before joining the faculty at JPII.  He was named assistant principal in 2013.

When Mr. Conticchio became principal in 2015, the enrollment at JPII was 45 students.  Today, the school is projecting a student population of 150 students for the 2019-2020 school year.

“Mrs. Alexander has my full support, and the Catholic School system in Greenville is extremely important to me,” said Conticchio.  “I will do whatever I can to help.”

Continuing the Momentum
Saint Peter Catholic School has made great strides in the past two years, creating a momentum Mrs. Alexander is passionate about continuing.  Here are a few of the important accomplishments:

  • Creation and publication of a strategic plan
  • Enrollment stability and growth
  • New math curriculum researched and selected for both K-5 and 6-8
  • New middle school science curriculum
  • iPads issued to middle school students for digital textbooks
  • Implementation of Professional Learning Communities to improve the academic flow between grade levels
  • The formation of a strong Advisory Council, along with the publication of a constitution and bylaws to guide the council.  The council has committees, but ad-hoc and standing. Real projects were undertaken by all of these committees and improvements were made within our school based on these committees findings and efforts.
  • An improvement in Catholic identity through having Mass on all Holy Days of Obligation, faith formation and service days for faculty and staff, and the implementation of Dress Uniforms for Fridays.
  • Improvement in communication to school community
Saint Peter Catholic School is honored to be your choice for your children’s education.  We continue to live our mission statement each day, that we build the leaders of tomorrow upon the foundation of Jesus Christ by preparing students in spirituality, academics, stewardship and service.

New Math Series Selected for Kindergarten - 5th Grade

6/30/2019

Students in K-5 will be using a different math series in the 2019-2020 school year. It's called Go Math. The program was piloted in our second grade classrooms at SPCS this past school year. After considering several different math series, Go Math was selected as the best choice for our children.
Go Math is different from the math series we have previously used at SPCS.  We conducted a survey of 2nd grade parents about Go Math. 83% of SPCS 2nd grade parents who responded said they noticed a difference between Go Math and the math series that was taught in previous years.  When asked what advice they would give to parents whose children are about to begin Go Math, 2nd grade parents' responses included:
  • Have a positive attitude about it, and your kids will too.
  • Pay attention early to get used to the format.
  • Embrace the new way of learning math concepts and use the interactive app to help when you and your child does not understand how they are teaching a math concept differently than how you were originally taught.
  • Patience.  If [the parents] aren't accustomed to sitting down and monitoring/helping with homework, they may need to be advised it would be very helpful for their student...and honestly easier on them in the long run too. It can really make a parent think.

Again, this is voluntary. You are welcome to donate on your particular date or on another date if it easier for you.  Thank you for your consideration!

I'm not Catholic, but I chose Saint Peter Catholic School for my children.  Here's why it was the right choice then and the right choice now.

Christy Cole is a Greenville native and a practicing Methodist. She attended SPCS, and when it came time for her and her husband Rodney to send their girls to school, they selected SPCS. And they have never looked back.

For our family, we feel it is up to the parents to educate their own children in their personal Christian beliefs. While Saint Peter Catholic  School does have Catholic religion classes, I have not encountered anything as a student who attended here myself, or as a parent of two middle schoolers that conflicted with our basic Christian faith. We explain to our children each denomination--Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholics, as well as other faiths--all have their own traditions, songs and prayers. In our Methodist tradition we believe we can go to Jesus without an intermediary like Mary or the priest.  However,  we ask others to pray for us, like our bible study teachers and prayer warriors. The main area of concern for our family is that our children are taught about Jesus’s sacrifice for us and our own acceptance of him as our Savior. Saint Peter Catholic School has always respected each student's choice of denomination while teaching and fostering the biblical  attributes of a Christian.
