St. Peter's Catholic School (formerly known as St. Raphael’s School) opened in 1946 on West Fifth Street in Greenville. The teachers, Sister Adorers of the Blood of Christ, a religious community of Sisters came from Pennsylvania to open a parochial school. The Sisters lived on the second floor of the house and classes were housed on the main floor. A fire destroyed the convent-school on December 1, 1952 and shortly after the school was relocated to a temporary location in a house on East Fourth Street and Latham Street. Within a few days after the fire, the Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh selected a new site on East 5th Street. On March 29, 1953 ground breaking for the new school was held and construction began on April 5th. Construction was completed on October 15th and the children moved into the new building on October 21, 1953. This structure is now our present middle school and cafeteria.

Over the years, several additions were added: an additional classroom, space for a library, the parish hall. The church sanctuary was formally established in the auditorium in the 1960’s and the school relinquished the use of the space. The cafeteria was relocated to the parish hall and the former cafeteria was converted into classroom space. The name of the school was changed to St. Peter's School in 1976. The Sisters concluded their ministry in Greenville in June of 1985. The Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn assumed the educational ministry of the school in August of 1985.  Further changes took place. The library was relocated to the old cafeteria and a modular building was placed next to the school to house the primary grades. The school expanded from K – 6 to K – 8. A science lab was added and the kitchen was remodeled. In 1991 six additional classrooms and a new administrative area were added to accommodate the growing number of students. In 1996 six classrooms were added as well as an art room, a music room and a new gymnasium. In August of 2006, we began a junior kindergarten program.  The school now houses a double junior Kindergarten through Eighth grade program.

The Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn ran the school until 1999. In June of 1999 we acquired our first lay principal for the school. In the summer of 2001 renovations were done to the cafeteria, the middle school bathrooms and to the library.

St. Peter's School is a viable part of the total religious education program of St. Peter's Parish. St. Peter's Catholic School operates in accordance with policies established by the Office of Education of the Raleigh Diocese and is accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
